The Mesa Police Department said the crash happened just after midnight Saturday near Southern Avenue and Gilbert Road.

"Preliminary information indicates the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Southern Avenue when it left the roadway, veered onto the sidewalk, and struck a bicyclist," police said in a news release.

Police said after the bicyclist was hit by the vehicle, the driver continued driving. They went on to hit a light pole, a bus stop and wall before finally coming to a stop.

"As is standard protocol in cases like this, investigators checked the driver for potential impairment," police said. "Charges against the driver are pending the results of testing."

An update on the bicyclist's condition is not available as of Saturday morning.

This is a developing story; additional details will be added as they become available.
