The collision triggered the deployment of multiple airbags in the Dodge Ram. Despite the force of the impact, all 24 students aboard the school bus, as well as both drivers, were unharmed. The truck, however, sustained enough damage to require towing from the scene.
Following the investigation, police charged the driver of the Dodge Ram with Careless Driving.
The Owen Sound Police Service has not released further details on the circumstances of the incident but confirmed that no one was injured.
It’s the second local incident in less than two weeks involving drivers not exercising caution and care around school buses. On October 11, 2024, around 8:29 a.m., a driver failed to stop for a school bus on Highway 10 in Chatsworth Township, north of Markdale, and hit a 13-year-old crossing the road. The youth sustained minor injuries.
As the 2023/24 school year ended in June, a delivery driver was charged with failing to stop for school bus signal lights in Owen Sound.
Drivers are reminded to stop for school buses with flashing red lights and drive carefully in school zones. Fines for violations range from $400 to $2,000, along with six demerit points.
